Top AI scribes for behavioral health, matched to your visits
Freed fits visits finished in your EHR, Mentalyc fits treatment-plan visits, Upheal fits therapy billed to insurance, and JotPsych fits prescribing visits.
You've tried an AI scribe, and the note was only part of your visit. Pick the next one by what your most-billed visit needs after the note.
| Scribe | Visit fit | Beyond the note | E-prescribing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freed | Visits you finish in your EHR | ICD-10 and CPT code suggestions | Not on Freed's home page |
| Mentalyc | Therapy or medication management visits that need treatment plans | Treatment plans, progress tracking, alliance scores, and EHR integrations | Not on Mentalyc's home page |
| Upheal | Therapy sessions billed to insurance | Scheduling, client self-scheduling, telehealth, and insurance billing | Not on Upheal's home page |
| JotPsych | Medication follow-ups that end in a prescription | 99214 and 90833 on the visit type, online booking, and claims in JotBill | Through DoseSpot, opened from the chart |
The Freed, Mentalyc, and Upheal home pages, read October 3, 2026, list their rows, and JotPsych's product guide lists the JotPsych row. If your visits end in a prescription, the E-prescribing column narrows the four scribes to one.
Freed, if you finish visits in your EHR
You get ICD-10 and CPT code suggestions from Freed's Coding Assistant. Each note then goes into your EHR, where you prescribe and bill.
Mentalyc, if your visits need treatment plans
Mentalyc is built for therapists, counselors, and other mental health professionals. Its home page says psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners use it for medication management notes, and along with the note you get a treatment planner, progress tracking, and alliance scores. Mentalyc's home page lists no e-prescribing.
Upheal, if you bill therapy sessions to insurance
Upheal offers progress note templates for therapy and psychiatry. Upheal adds scheduling, client self-scheduling, telehealth, and insurance billing. E-prescribing isn't on Upheal's home page.
JotPsych, if you prescribe
Set up your follow-up visit type once. Each follow-up opens the medication management template with 99214 and 90833 on the visit, so the codes are set before you see the patient.
Prescriptions go out through DoseSpot, which opens in a new tab from the patient's chart. For a controlled prescription, you'll follow the authentication requested when you send it. JotAudit checks each note against the codes billed before you sign. Patients book online. In JotBill, your biller checks each claim and selects Submit claim.
Start with the first check if your visits end in a prescription: the scribe has to send the prescription from the patient's chart. Run the other four checks in order.
- 1Medication follow-up: sends the prescription from the patient's chart
- 2Medication follow-up: captures medication changes and the mental status exam
- 3Every visit: comes with a signed business associate agreement (BAA)
- 4Every visit: sends the note to your EHR, or replaces the EHR
- 5Therapy session: builds treatment plans and tracks progress
The checks start with what a medication follow-up needs and end with what a therapy session needs. A scribe that fails a check for the visit you bill most can't cover that visit alone.
