JotPsych vs. Freed
Freed is a general-medical AI scribe built to cover more than 30 specialties at once. Behavioral health is one of them. JotPsych is built for behavioral health, and it does not stop at the note: e-prescribing, scheduling, telehealth, billing, credentialing, and a documentation-to-billing audit all live in the same system.
Freed is an AI scribe built for outpatient medicine broadly: the company lists more than 30 specialties on its site, including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, OB-GYN (obstetrics and gynecology), and, among the rest, psychiatry and mental health.1 Its core product transcribes the visit and drafts a note. Two features go beyond the note: a Coding Assistant that suggests ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision) and CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes and flags the evaluation and management (E/M) level, and Front Desk, an AI receptionist that answers calls and handles appointment requests and messages. Freed reports 98% recall on medical terms across its specialty list, more than 26,000 clinicians on the platform, and 32,589,627 patient visits transcribed in 2025.1 Freed publishes its pricing, tiered by note volume and feature set, with a separate custom plan for multi-clinician groups.2
JotPsych was built for behavioral health, and the note is one piece of a larger system. JotRx, JotPsych's e-prescribing module, writes prescriptions in-product and supports electronic prescribing of controlled substances (EPCS) for Schedule II through V medications, the category covering stimulants and many psychiatric drugs, with the two-factor authentication the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) requires. Patients book their own appointments through a public scheduling page. Telehealth visits run inside JotPsych, no separate video tool required. JotBill submits insurance claims and scrubs them for structural errors before they reach the payer. JotCred collects credentialing documents and routes a completed application package to an internal team that manages the payer applications. JotAudit checks whether the note itself supports the CPT code billed and whether the visit meets payer-specific documentation rules, a check that runs after the note is signed, not while it is drafted.
Where Freed genuinely fits
The multispecialty range is real, and it is Freed's strongest argument. A clinician who splits a week between family medicine and therapy, or a mixed clinic billing both medical and behavioral codes, gets one scribe across all of it instead of switching tools by appointment type. Front Desk is also a genuine capability JotPsych does not have: an AI receptionist that takes the call, not just a page a patient fills out themselves.
Where the gap shows up
For a practice that lives entirely in behavioral health, breadth across specialties is not the same as depth in one. Freed's psychiatry and mental-health support is one template family among 30-plus, not a system built around behavioral-health visit types, DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition) documentation, or payer rules specific to psychotherapy and medication management. And Freed's own site does not describe e-prescribing, patient self-scheduling, telehealth, claim submission, eligibility checks, or credentialing. For a prescribing psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP) managing controlled substances and billing insurance every day, a code suggestion inside the note is not the same as a claim that gets scrubbed, submitted, and audited against what was actually documented.

"I subscribed to JotPsych because it IS superior to Freed.ai."
Licensed Therapist, Private Practice"The less we use Freed the better. Then we could fully move over to you. It's been going really well."
Office Manager, Psychiatric Group PracticeIf your practice is genuinely multispecialty, Freed's range is a real advantage. If your practice is behavioral health full time, and you prescribe, schedule, and bill insurance as part of that, a general scribe with a coding suggestion covers less of the job than it looks like at first glance.
